When min width set to 800 (and also tried 800px) A3 still shrinks to less than 800 px in width. I would have expected the sidebars to remain 150 each and the center column to stop shrinking at 500px width - what am I missing?? I don't want to impose an upper limit to the fluid width, just a minimum width - ideas?

In which browser/version does that happen? Its working for me
Min and max width are independent, none, one or both can be used

I'm having the same problem- in both Firefox and Chrome, with Atahualpa 3. The MIN and MAX seem to have no effect. It kinda makes things look wacky when I have a 1920x1080 monitor, and the header is nowhere near that width.
I just realized it's actually my fault- 1280px is too wide for the header and I have fixed width 200px sidebars- 480px just isn't enough space for that.
