It shows the monthly archive of posts under a certain category (which is what I want) but when you click on a month, ALL posts in the category are displayed, regardless of month. Not useful.

Help please?

It was a permalink problem. I now got it to work with the permalink structure /%category%/%year%/%monthnum%/%post_id%/
