Translucent Sidebars

I have a very graphic background, which I would like to show through the sidebars and the posting areas.

Many times I have made the graphics work on forums and other work.

I've tried insert a background image on the sidebar, using a .gif and a .png

This is what I have for a left sidebar style

border-right: dashed 1px #CCCCCC;
padding: 10px 10px 10px 10px;
background: url(http://SITE/wordpress/wp-content/the...s/beige_bg.png) repeat;

I'd be grateful for any help on why this isn't happening for me.

I don't know about making the transparency, but I do see a typo:
