when i pull up my site the last post shows up, but if you click into any of the posts before that (and even the link for the current post), i get an error 404 page.

can anyone please advise on why this might be happening?

did you change your permalink setting?

from the get-go i set my permalinks to all be the same

What version of Atahualpa, Wp and PHP?
What is the url?
Did you add a plugin?
If you switch to the default theme do you get the error? (in which case it's not Atahualpa)
Disable all plugins and add them back in a few at a time to see if one causes the problem.

you know what? i apologize...i'm running a number of blogs and i just realized my problem is occuring on the regular default theme for wordpress...there's no atahalupa.
