You would have to add that code to a theme file and that won't survive an upgrade. My solution would be to add a new widget area in place of %image, put a image widget or rotating image widget in that widget area and use a plugin like Display Widgets to define the pages it will or won't show on.

body div#imagecontainer {display:none;}
body.home div#imagecontainer {display:block;}
