translation problem

I'm just using the atahualpa theme but i can not run the translation:
I put it in the root of the theme (wp-content/themes/atahualpa) the following files: it_IT.po, it_IT.mo.
my wp-config.php has: define ('WPLANG', 'it_IT');

despite this, the theme is in English ..

there may be some conflict with the plugins? eg qtranslate?

What should I check?
