When remove the line "%cats", the actual buttons disappear but i'm left with this gray stripe right across the screen... I'm loosing it trying to find out how to get rid of it so i thought that maybe some of you guys would know how to do this?

Need to see the actual URL to look at the site. What do you have coed in the header area configuration (the %pages etc)

that's not remnents of the %cats, that is the styling in CSS Inserts.

You mst have done an IMPORT of the ADSENSE.txt style and the gray bars are part of that styling.
What you are seeing is the background image specified at ATO->Body, Text & Links->Body Style
