Wordpress Themes - WP Forum at BFA
There will be no more development for Atahualpa (or any other theme), and no support. Also no new registrations. I turned off the donation system. I may turn the forum to read only if it gets abused for spam. Unfortunately I have no time for the forum or the themes. Thanks a lot to the people who helped in all these years, especially Larry and of course: Paul. Take care and stay healthy -- Flynn, Atahualpa developer, Sep 2021

I've tried to install and use Juggledad's Mulit Column/Custom Query page template to create a home page with a single post on top and three posts in 3 columns under it. Here's a link to my current result which has the one post on top as it should be but then has 3 posts stacked in the left column. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Umm....I don't see a link....
What happens if you make the first post a draft to see if it is causing an effect?

Hi Juggledad,
Thanks for your prompt reply.
When I made the first of the three posts a draft, it simply disappeared from the top of the left column. The text at the top of the page apparently isn't being treated as a post - it's simply the editable content of the page.
The link that I forgot to include is : http://wbidemo.com/encompasshealthcaresolutions/

there is an custom field to display or not display the page text. what are your custom fields set to?

by the way, with only one post active there is no way to see an issue...

If you say you want 3 columns and want 3 posts above the columns, how many posts will you need to see any in the columns?

The answer to this question will make up 80% of your final grade

Ps what is the wvr-three-column-layout for??

1) what is the custom field 'wvr_page_layout three-column' from? a plugin? is it something that is making trying to create a 3 column layout too?

2) what happens if you disable all your plugins?

3) I don't see your custom query, did you create a custom feild 'custom_query' with a query?

4) go to ATO->Export/Import settings - do an export and attach the file to a reply.

I'm not sure where that other three column custom field originated. I was trying to see if it had any useful effect but it is now deleted. I also deactivated all plugins and have attached the exported settings file. Thanks again for your help and your patience.

can you explain - in english - what you think this CSS in your CSS inserts is doing?
HTML Code:
div.post, div.page .mccq_column1 .mccq_column2 .mccq_column3 {
    display: inline-block;
    width: 33%;
}

I'm trying to set the width of the three columns to 33% so they will fit side by side across the page.

I know what your trying to do, but what I want you to do is parse that CSS selector and tell me how it will work.

Sorry, but I'm out of my depth on this css. I tried to use Firebug to find the appropriate selector(s) to use but I'm sure that I blew it.

Go look at the thread I pointed out in post #4 and there is an example of the CSS you would use for three columns. The CSS you coded is...how do I say this...it will do what you told it to do, but that' snot what you wanted it to do.

You might want to take a CSS tutorial.http://htmldog.com/guides/css/ is good

Thanks Juggledad,
I changed the css as per your suggestion in Post #4 but the three posts are now stacking and taking up the full width of the page. I've attached the current settings file.

According to a previous post of your you said you had posts_above_the_column set to 3 so in order to know if the code is working you will need to change that or add more posts.

what you have is….different but not correct. You have
HTML Code:
body.page-id-2.mccq_column1 body.page-id-2.mccq_column2 body.page-id-2.mccq_column3 {
    width: 33%;
}
what this CSS Selector says in english is:
for a body element with the two classes page-id-2 and mcc_column3 that
is a child of a body element with the two classes page-id-2 and mcc_column2 that
is a child of a body element with the two classes page-id-2 and mcc_column1 , apply this CSS rule.

I don't think you will find a case where this selector applies. And this is not what the example showed.

(You really shold take a CSS tutorial )

I did just go through the tutorial and have now separated out the three column width css specifications. However, the problem is there doesn't seem to be any corresponding HTML elements with those classes for the css to apply to.
I've attached the latest setting file.
Thanks,
Art

Also did you set posts_above_the_column to less than 3 and/or add some more posts.

OK, by setting the value of posts_above_the_column to 0, I got the three posts to show up side-by-side! Now what I need to do is to reverse the order of the posts and put in some padding so they have a bit of space between them.
Thanks again for your help and patience.
P.S.: If you know how to easily reverse the order of the posts, please let me know.

This is where you have to craft your 'custom-query' and look at the options that are available. see http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_...ce/query_posts

Getting these three post to appear side-by-side is a great breakthrough as far as I'm concerned. However, before I can show this website to my client, I need to space them out so they don't run into each other and get rid of the date, category and comment closed remarks at the bottom of each column that makes the look like blog posts. Could you please point me in the right direction for accomplishing this?

you currentlty have the following in your CSS Inserts
HTML Code:
table.mccq_column1{ width:200px;cellpadding:10px cellspacing:10px}
body.page-id-2.mccq_column2{ width:300px;cellpadding:10px cellspacing:10px}
body.page-id-2.mccq_column3{ width:200px;cellpadding:10px cellspacing:10px}
1) where did you come up with 'table.mccq_column1'?

2) I think you need to do a google search and look up the CSS syntax 'cellpadding' and 'cellspacing'.

Another thing is you are missing a space in the code. For instance
HTML Code:
table.mccq_column1
Should be
HTML Code:
table .mccq_column1
And
HTML Code:
body.page-id-2.mccq_column2
Should be
HTML Code:
body.page-id-2 .mccq_column2
And as Juggledad mentioned you need to understand padding syntax. I think padding instead of of column widths might make more sense.
