However, this is a separate question. I'd like for this gallery to instead of opening up the lightbox effect when a thumbnail is clicked, to take the user to the image attachment page:

Is this possible? This is a standard WP gallery, no plugins installed, and the gallery settings for LINK TO are set to ATTACHMENT PAGE. Yet, when I click on one of the the thumbnails, I'm getting the lightbox.

It looks like that is the way Montezuma handles galleries. I fiddled a bit and didn't come up with a quick fix. When you click on a WP gallery the built in jquery.colorbox-min.js is being used.
