hi I've been asked to help a friend using the atahualpa theme.

It's a 3.7.3 install

I'm looking at how/where you are looking to put the code to get a 800x300px image in as the header.

I have uploaded to the correct location via ftp /wp-content/themes/atahualpa/images/header/ and now am looking to simply get it into the site. If anyone can direct me to this most basic of threads i would be incredibly greatful.

go to ato->Style & edit HEADER AREA->Configure Header Area and add '%image' to the option.
you'll also need to go to ATO–> header image–> header image: height and fill in your image height.
