I read that in order to remove the "powered by wordpress and atahualpa" link from the footer, I need to be a gold member. So far my status, after donating $10.-, is 'greenback member'. If I donate an additional $10.-, will that automatically upgrade me to gold membership, or do I have to donate another $20.-?

The donation levels are cumulative - so yes if you donate another $10 you will be a gold member.
