I was able to insert a background menu bar image using the insert

div#menu1 ul.rMenu {
background: url("http://www.northfieldretirement.org.customers.tigertech.n et//wp-content/themes/atahualpa/images/menu.jpg")
repeat-x scroll left top
}

But how might I remove the brown coloring so the image shows through the actual buttons??

How did you come up with the code you had? All you have to do is put a transparent background on the li elements of the menu. Adding the following to CSS Inserts is one way to accomplish what you want.

div#menu1 ul.rMenu li {
    background: transparent !important;
}
