change widgets background color problems

Hi, am hoping that someone can help me with this issue. I am trying to change the color of the background of my widgets in the footer menu i created.

I put this is css insert for the first footer widget and nothing has happened. I am using the right div?

div#footer_area_1 {background: #dcdcdc}
div#footer_area_1 div.widget-title h3 {background: #dcdcdc;

did you try using FireBug in FireFox to examine what the CSS being used and the selectors are?

Also you should be looking to style the widget you put in the footer area. Not the footer area itself.
