Under "style widgets" there was a set styling (not "default" margin: 0 0 15px 0 but one that was already styled. I wiped it out and now I can't retrieve it. Can anyone tell me how to find it?

The default install would have come with those default settings, plus a border?. If yours was already styled, and you deleted the settings, you have lost them unless you have a backup of the site and want to restore back to that backup.
I've edited mine, not sure how much of it was default, I think the border was there originally, but I'd changed it to white. Pretty sure I added the font size, you can make it whatever size you want or delete that line. You can also add background images to the container.

Widget Container
font-size: 11px;
margin: 0 0 10px 0;
padding: 10px;
border: solid 4px #fff; (was #eee I think)
