i re-sized the background image to match the menu bars. how can i move (or get rid of) those faint gray vertical dash marks going across the screen through the logo, and how can i move those icons for rss and comments down into the menu bar area again?

Do you mean surrounding the image, like at the end of each line? If so, take a close look...it's an optical illusion (no pun intended)
