Using a custom field within an excerpt... or trying to

I am moving a large blog site over to Atahaulpa as part of a re-design.

The old site theme uses a custom field (image) within the excerpt. I presume it is part of the theme

old site

new site

My question is where ( using ATO ) can I put my code to achieve the same result

"get the custom field(image)", "echo the excerpt text", "display the (styled in ATO excerpts) Read More"

<img src="/wp-content/uploads/%meta('image')%" alt="%post-title%" />
Is what I thought might work to get the image -

is this correct ?

where should I be putting it ?

One last thing - the excerpt text is written by the author for each post and entered via the dashboard (it is not a generated snippet)

Thanks in advance

Use the featured image function (right column usually near the bottom) and the excerpt field for what shows up on the excerpt page.

Thanks for the reply,

Why does the image not appear in the excerpt in my Atahaulpa test version of this site, as it does appear in the in the current existing theme ?

My problem is that I can't find the file in either template which is configuring these excerpts.

My secondary problem is that I know from experience here that I should not even be looking for it , because we should be using ATO to configure everything, right ?

The current site has hundred of posts already written which (I think) are using an image custom field to define the image in the excerpt.

So what should I be doing to encourage Atahaulpa to display the image in excerpts.

Additional comments:

Sorry - I looked at 'featured image' as advised, but this only gave me the opportunity to add an image.

I want to grab the existing images which are used in excerpts an ddisplay them in my atahulapa theme

it also occurs to me that I may be making a big assumption about the custome fiel dna dthe images are being sourced from elsewhere.

Unfortunatly blog author is uncontactable currently

by default all html is stripped from an excerpt (this is a wordPress default) so Atahualpa does the same thing. There is an option in the 'excerpt' section of the theme to 'do not strip' certain HTML code that you put in. If you don't have <img> in there, then no images will be displayed.
