Hi,
I was contacted today by several firefox users who complained that my frontpage is not showing properly. However, another person commented in my forum that she has no problems seeing my webpage correctly. Turns out, she is using an older firefox version (automatic update diabled) and Linux.
Is anyone else experiencing this kind of a problem?
I checked. My site ( www.annsworld.de) is showing fine in IE, Chrome and Opera.
In Firefox, it briefly flashes the frontpage as it should be (for a fraction of a second) and then reverts to a view of just the centre column without any sidebars or header.
If one then clicks on one of the posts - the view of the post page goes to normal as it should be - complete with all sidebars and headers.
Very strange.
Ann.

It is not showing properly for my in FF 3.6.3 but other Atahualpa sites are showing fine. What version of Atahualpa and WordPress is that site on?

I have looked a bit and cannot find the issue. Have you added any CSS Inserts, modified any of the theme files, or added any older plugins?

Hi Larry,
Thank you for having a look at it.
I installed the whole thing starting only ten days ago. So the pluggins I added should have been the latest versions. Added a little bit into the CSS file via the ATO. Nothing major though - defining fonts for titles. I am just learning how to use CSS and PHP. So I did not touch any theme files. All the changes were done with plugins and with what I could do via the ATO.
I think it was working before the firefox update. At least I did not have any complaints. It never occured to me to check. I downloaded Firefox only today when I found out that there were problems. It seems most people have automatic updates - so it s hard to check, if the older version really was working ok for this. The one user that has an older version also uses Linux - so I do not know, whether it working has to do with Linux rather than with the older Firefox version.

I just did the Firefox upgrade and checked my site, and it looks fine. I checked Ann's, and it looks as she said. I checked it in Chrome and Safari, and it looks like it should: left and right sidebars and right inner sidebar.
Ann, I suggest that you disable all of your plugins and even remove any CSS or anything else you've done. Check the site. If it's back to normal, you know where to start, at least. Use some of the default widgets to populate the sidebars, if deactivating plugins also removes your widgets. Re-enable each plugin and check it in Firefox as you go along. Remember to dump your FF cache and reload as you go.
Just because a plugin seems OK does not mean it will work well in all cases. I've found that out many times!
Let us know what happens.

Thanks Paulae. I will try that. Depressing as it is... it took so long to get it this way...
I'll keep you posted.

Paulae, You did it!
it was the "post teaser" plugin. If I disable that, the frontpage shows properly in Firefox.
Of course, now I have a new Problem.
I was using the "post teaser" to wrap text around the thumbnail in excerpts. Do you happen to know how I can fix this or if there is a comparable plugin?
Many thanks!
Ann.

You don't need a plugin just to show thumbnails.....I've got one showing on my front page just to demonstrate: http://www.larchmontgazette.com/
As a rule, we don't use them. WP 2.9.2 lets you choose to use a photo as a thumbnail when you upload it.
There is a plugin called Thumbnails for Excerpts, but I don't believe it wraps the text. Maybe you could tweak it to do that.

Wow, that's a nice looking website. How did you do that with the page numbers at the bottom?
The Hastings Superintendent article excerpt wraps around the thumbnail. How did you get it to do that? That's exactly what I wanted my excerpts to do.
I also like the idea with the polls on the side.
Thanks!

Thank you! It's been a lot of work, and I'm not happy with the overall design, but we have to get so much material on the front page, it's always a struggle to keep the site looking clean and not too jammed-up.
The page numbers are done with the Page Navi plugin.
The thumbnails are just float: left, not really wrapped in the text. Just go into Edit Post, and in the right pane you should see Post Thumbnail (at least, that's where it is in my WP 2.9.2 dashboard). Then you'll get to choose which image to use for your thumbnail. Or, when you first create a post and insert an image, you can choose Use as Thumbnail as you do the image upload.

Well, you have a lot of information on that page and it still looks appealing to read. Often things look so convoluted on pages that it turns the potential reader right off. Your site looks very clear and structured, easy to look at and to find things. I like it.
Anyhow. Am struggling along with the thumbnail. Text is ok now, but the captions are messing up.
I think I'll call it a night and try again tomorrow.
Many, many thanks for your help though. Do you have a donation button somewhere? You really did save me from hours of frustration and misery.

Thanks for the kind words. And thanks for the donation idea, but I'm not a moderator here, just an avid Atahualpa user. If you're in a donating mood, go ahead and do it, for Flynn or Juggledad, who put in untold hours to help all of us.
You won't get captions with thumbnails, just with the regular images within a post.

ok. I'll do that.
The caption shows up in the excerpt text. I woulnd't mind, if it only showed up in the post. But stuck into the excerpt as text is confusing and doesn't look too good either.
Ah well. Tomorrow.
Good night,
Ann.

Where are you putting your captions? If you look at http://www.larchmontgazette.com/news...rks-basements/, you see a caption, but it doesn't appear with the thumbnail on the front page.

When I upload a photo it asks for a description. In the article edit function the whole think then looks as follows:
[caption id="attachment_505" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="Finos Wunde <br/>Foto: Lena Schenk"]<a href="http://www.annsworld.de/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Fino-1-Large.jpg"><img src="http://www.annsworld.de/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Fino-1-Large.jpg" alt="" title="Fino-1 (Large)" width="150" class="size-full wp-image-505" /></a>[/caption]
On the photo the caption correctly shows:
Finos Wunde
Foto: Lena Schenk
On the excerpt it shows as (the *** denote where the thumbnail is):
***** Finos Wunde Foto: Lena Schenk
***** text text text text text text text text text
***** text text texttext text texttext text text
***** text text texttext text texttext text texttext text text
***** text text texttext text texttext text text
I am really going to bed now! :D
Good night. Read you in the morning.
The donation to the atahualpa team is on its way...
Thanks,
Ann.

I hope you've gone to bed by now.
The photo I mentioned has this in the HTML editor for the post:
Code:
[caption id="attachment_13201" align="aligncenter" width="420" caption="Turtle Park at Vanderburg Avenue in Larchmont was swamped by heavy rain on March 30. Photograph by Emily Grotta"]<a href="http://www.larchmontgazette.com/wp27/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/20100330turtlepark.jpg"><img class="size-large wp-image-13201 " title="20100330turtlepark" src="http://www.larchmontgazette.com/wp27/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/20100330turtlepark-600x450.jpg" alt="" width="420" height="315" /></a>[/caption]
Yours is:
Code:
[caption id="attachment_505" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="Finos Wunde <br/>Foto: Lena Schenk"]<a href="http://www.annsworld.de/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Fino-1-Large.jpg"><img src="http://www.annsworld.de/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Fino-1-Large.jpg" alt="" title="Fino-1 (Large)" width="150" class="size-full wp-image-505" /></a>[/caption]
Right off, I don't see any problem with yours. Perhaps if you try placing the photo farther down the page, maybe in the second paragraph? I think the excerpt function is grabbing the first thing it sees, the photo and its caption, and showing it where you don't want it. If you put it lower in the post, it should first find the first paragraph of text, then add the thumbnail. Just a guess.

Hi there,
the odyssee continues....
You were right (once again) regarding the location of the photo interfering with the thumbnail. So I moved all photos away from the first paragraph.
Then I found that the "Smart Youtube" Plugin also caused problems in firefox ... ditched that as well.
Then found that in 2.9.2. Videos can be inserted by just pasting the url <duh>
Have not figured out yet, where to format them (pretty frames and all that) and how to get a thumbnail of the video into the excerpt.
Have also found another glitch. Way at the top of my front page - a little bit of code shows up in firefox: <!-- Main Bodyc
Don't have a clue where that is coming from now.... <sigh>
Happy Easter ...
Ann.

Darn, I thought I had taken them all out.
Any idea why that funny bit of code shows up in firefox?

Check in ATO>Style & Edit HEADER AREA>Configure Header Area at the beginning of the area where you put the menu code.

Hi Larry,
I don't thinks there's anything there - or, rather the only thing there is:
<?php bfa_widget_area('name=Header Widget'); ?> %pages %logo
So that does not contain, what is showing up there.
Any idea where else I could look?
Thanks,
Ann.

In WordPress go to Appearance>Widgets and look for a widget called Header Widget. It's probably some left over code in there.
