my method is to think of a photo/image as an 8 x 11 peice of paper - the thing is you only get to use a 1 inch slice of the photo/image. the image should be short and wide.
this means that a close up, full frame portrate will never work (unless you just want the eyes or lips) but a distance shot of a landscape would be good (you can cut out the sky and lots of the ground for example)
so when you look thru the view finder, remember you only get to use a tiny slice of what you see, so put the important part of the image in that slice.
