Can any body point me in the direction of a plugin/widget to expand and contract the pages widget in the Atahualpa theme.

The javascript is in the source code of the site, although I am not sure if you can use it. I suggest that you post on his blog and ask.

In my neverending quest for vertical navigation, I think I ran across a WP plugin that does this same thing. Try Collapsing Pages.
Also, Page Tree does something similar, with a different GUI.
