Where would I place a mobile detection script so this picks up ok? so my site will render as a mobile site when viewed on a phone or othermobile device.

Just not sure where to add now you can't enter php via the theme options.

I'd try putting it in the ato->add HTML/CSS inserts - try it in different places and see what works.

Thank you very much - will try popping it in there - had manually added it to the header.php file.
