Wordpress Themes - WP Forum at BFA
There will be no more development for Atahualpa (or any other theme), and no support. Also no new registrations. I turned off the donation system. I may turn the forum to read only if it gets abused for spam. Unfortunately I have no time for the forum or the themes. Thanks a lot to the people who helped in all these years, especially Larry and of course: Paul. Take care and stay healthy -- Flynn, Atahualpa developer, Sep 2021

Possible? Downsampling Header for Retina

Is there any way to downsample the header image for retina displays in ATO or in the code? I'm not experienced with PHP coding so I would need detailed guidance if I were hardcode, and I'm not looking to for a "retina recognition" option swtich, because I don't care whether it takes two seconds longer to load as it's only one image and not that big a deal Anyone with experience on this?

why not just load a downsampled image in the first place?

I don't really know what you mean in relation to this. I have a, say 1000x200 px image, for the header, and for it to be the same physical size on retina, the header must be 2000x400 px originally and I have to set the width="1000" and height="200" (downsampling), and it will then not be fuzzy on retina screens as far as I'm concerned because the retina device won't multiply the bitmap pixels. So I'm wondering if it's possible to do this in atahualpa. If I load an already downsampled image it won't help me with the retina problem.

Media is not controled by a theme it's controled by WordPress.

I read that the new retina displays are a probelm for bandwidth usage since sites serve the higher quality images which causes them to take longer to load because they are bigger and use up more of the monthly allowance of a user (if ou are on a data plan)

remember there are three factors in the size (quality) of an image - the height and width and the depth (the dpi) so you want the loest DPI that still lookas good on a retina display. Do this in an image editing program before loading it to your site - experiment a little to see what is acceptable to you.

I'm still unclear on uploading an image for retina. If my header area is 800x200, and I upload an image that's 1600x400, Atahualpa displays the top 200 pixels and the center 800 pixels. How do I get it to display the full 1600x400 image as 800x200 on retina devices and downsize the image to 800x200 for non-retina devices?

Are there plugins that work with Atahualpa to do this?

You will have to search for a plugin, I know of none, but I haven't looked.
