Is there a way I can set thumbnails pics to appear beside recent posts in my right sidebar?

if you are using the default widget you could try posting the question of wordpress.org
if you are using a plugin, you would have to talk to the author of the plugin
your other choice is to code a plugin yourself and figure out how to do it
