Montezuma seems to come with a default colorbox implementation for image galleries. Are there any settings that I can control for this? I am trying to restrict the image size to a maximum width of the page.

I want to apply the settings to galleries that link to files, e.g.

[gallery link="file" ids="580,581,582,583,584,585,586,587,588"]

I tried to use an alternative plugin (WP Lightbox 2), but then the images are opened in both lightboxes.

works fine for me - did you try disabling ALL other plugins - including jetpack if you use it?
