Can I make pages only display main categories and not sub categories

Can I make pages only display main categories and not sub categories

If I have Books, Movies, as main page categories, how can I have only those show up on the pages and sub categories (eg, Moby dick, The Secret) be hidden from view and only seen from the books page (ie not the column listings. Thanks
