Hi, sorry is this has been covered before but the truth is I am a recent convert to wordpress and I love this theme. Anyway, how do I create my own template page and assign that specific template to a new page via the admin area?

You can just copy index.php -> newtemplatename.php, then edit the newly created newtemplatename.php
