I'm running a really old version of Wordpress (2.8.4) with a really old version of Atahualpa (3.3.2). I want to bite the bullet and upgrade my Wordpress so I can install a plug-in that only works with the new version. But Atahualpa is working fine for me. I have it configured exactly as I want, and I don't want to make any changes. I really don't want to upgrade and risk breaking my settings. On the other hand, I REALLY don't want to upgrade Wordpress and break my entire blog because the theme I'm using is incompatible with the latest version of Wordpress. So I really need to know...

Is Atahualpa 3.3.2 compatible with Wordpress 3.7.7 (latest version)? It looks like the changes have all been enhancements and bug fixes that don't affect me, but I can't tell for sure.

I would BACKUP EVERYTHING - database and files
Then switch to twenty-ten
upgrade wp to 3.3.2
check things out with twenty-ten
manually install atahualpa 3.7.7
switch to Atahualap 3.7.7 and check things out

if you are uncomfortable or don't understand this, you should hire someone to do it for you.

Somebody please tell me what "twenty-ten" is? I'm a PHP programmer. If I knew what "twenty-ten" was, I'm sure I could handle this upgrade on my own.

Apparently "twenty-ten" refers to some sort of theme. Still searching to figure out what and where. A teeny bit more explanation would have been a big time saver.

Twenty Ten is one of the default WordPress themes. Twenty Eleven is installed by default with newer versions of WordPress.

Ah, bless you. I don't have it - my Wordpress version is very old. I have:

WordPress Classic 1.5 by Dave Shea
WordPress Default 1.6 by Michael Heilemann

yes eithor will do, but once you get up to WP 3.3.2 swap to twenty-eleven and dump those themes

Will all the code I used with Atahualpa 3.3.2 work with Atahualpa 3.7.7? I'm trying to avoid recoding as much as possible. I have two Web sites to upgrade and this is going to be painful. Basically I inserted a bunch of custom CSS into various files within the theme. I'm hoping the new version isn't too much different.

As a programmer, you should know that if you edited the theme code, those changes will not magically appear in a new version of the theme code. You will have to make those changes again.

However, if you only used the theme options, then you should be fine since the options are stored in the database.

That said, I know of no one that has made this large a jump before. You could go in smaller jumps, say to atahualpa 343, then atahualpa 351, then wp 2.9.1 then wp 3.3.0 then atahualpa 3.6.7 then wp 3.3.2 then atahuala 3.7.7

make sure you do a DATABASE backup before you start

I don't mean I edited the theme code itself. I spoke unclearly. I mean I used the theme options to add CSS to the header, etc. I have these snippets backed up. I guess I'll just have to do it and see what happens. It's so tedious.

I just posted a really big blog post that's getting a lot of attention and I want to do the upgrade so I can add an "AddThis" button. But this is so disruptive that I don't know what to do - perhaps it's not such a good idea to touch it right now.

I'll definitely back up the database before I upgrade. But if the old Atahualpa doesn't work with the new Wordpress, it won't help me much. (((sigh)))

What you have to be most mindful of is reuploading the images you added to the atahualpa/images folder and be aware that any php code you may have added to the theme options (other than new widget areas) won't work since php code was disallowed in theme options per WordPress. There are some workarounds however.

Hmmm... Good tips. I can't remember if I have any PHP code in there. It's been a long time since I looked at it. With Atahualpa, I was able to make the blog look just like the rest of my Web site, which I was very happy about. It's highly customized with stuff on the header and sidebars, and I'd hate to lose all that. Maybe I'll give it a try late at night when traffic is down.

I wonder if the new Atahualpa works with the old Wordpress (so I can back it out again in case of disaster). Probably no one knows that.

I doubt it, there were changes made to WP 3.x forcing all themes to make changes, can't remember but it might have been about atahualpa 3.6.x
