I don't like editing theme files as they won't survive an upgrade. Instead for this type of issue I would use two plugins. the Linkable Title Html and Php Widget and the Display Widgets Here are the steps.

• Install the two plugins
• Add a New Widget Area in the Configure Header Area box per the instruction in the Add New Widget Area section of the theme options.
• Add the Linkable Title widget to the new widget area and put your slider code in it.
