I tried Atahualpa for fun and kind of fell for it. But when I started applying it in my work, which requires localization, a tons of issues has appeared.
First of all, atahualpa.pot is too old and doesn't correspond to the current source. Moreover, in some cases there are no any __() functions called. Especially when considering date output like "F jS, Y" etc. Finally, in 3.4.9 some more entries have moved to styles/*.txt files, where they aren't being translated at all.
As for .pot file, I can fix it myself, though it's not too convinient, but what about code issues? Are they scheduled for fixing in near future? How can I help making it faster? Actually, I consider refactoring all text output.
