Tranparent GIF image not showing as transparent in table

I use a table with a background image and that works just as expected once I took out the background color for the table. However, when I place a transparent image in a cell it shows with a gray background. It shows transparency correctly in the WYSIWYG editor, but not live. I've been fiddling for a few days and have run out of ideas - can anyone help?
