Is there a way to style the kickerbox so that on the left I have some text, say the %author% aligned to the left and a gif image aligned to the right of the kicker box.

since you can add HTML in the kicker, use a table with one row and two cells - put a class 'alignright' and 'alignleft' in the two <td class=...> statements and that might work for you
