I'd like to add an e-mail link in the footer of each page so that the user can easily contact the site owner. Is there a preferred (ie., easy) process for this?

By the by I am using Atahualpa 3.4.4.

You just insert it as plain html in the footer
Appearance - Atahualpa options - Style and edit footer - Footer content (field)
eg.
<a href="mailto:contact@site.com">Send me an e-mail</a>

Exactly what do you have in the ato->Style and edit footer->Footer content?
