Does anybody have any tips for setting the background color behind the header image?

In your particular situuation adding the following to ATO>Add HTML/CSS Inserts>CSS Inserts is one way. This would add a black background behind your iStockPhoto image.

HTML Code:

div.header-image-container {

background-color: #000 !important;

}
