Best way to convert existing site to Wordpress site

This doesn't relate to the Atahualpa but I would like to become expert in that theme and plan to visit this forum often. Anyway my problem is that I am so enjoying learning about Wordpress as a website platform that I'm considering changing my primary business site to WP. I just did a similar thing with another site of mine, converting it to Joomla. That is I built the site in a subfolder then moved it to the root folder and removed the old site. It was kind of messy but it worked. I will need to do the same with WP. I’m using Fatcow hosting service so they handle all the WAMP and stuff like that. Does anybody know of any tips or suggestions? I’ve tried searching “best ways to convert existing website to Wordpress” but no luck so far.

BTW, Fatcow seems to have its act together as a hosting service, particularly for the addons such as Wordpress.

Thanks
Peter

I would suggest using an Apache server vrs a wamp server

Other than that, there is no magic way that I'm aware of. Create your site, set up the site style and start copying the text from the pages in. I wouldn't even try to make it exact, since the time spend will probably not be worth the end result. After all, the look and feel of a site is now where near the importance of the information on the site.

It's like I told my kids when they were writing papers for school, don't worry about the formatting, concentrate on the content. Once the content is there, you can pretty it up (if you have the time and inclination) no one ever got an 'A' because their paper 'looked' good.

You know the probelm, you can either have an index.html or an index.php but not both. So you need to build the WP site in a staging area then move all the files to the root of the site, replacing index.html with index.php etc. I usually work alone so I have gaps in my knowledge. So I guess you assume there would be some down time for the site? I was thinking it might take a week to build so best to completely build it before moving it. I know that if I handled the Apached and stuff on my own, I could be using Bitnami, which is good for local testing but my service provider is handling all that.

thnx
