Tiling a background for width but not height?

Hi all, sorry if this has come up before but i couldn't see it with a search. I am using 3.4.1 and want to have a gradient as my background image. My gradient is 1 px wide and 1000 px high. I am using the default 'repeat top left' for the background tag in body style settings. This works fine on small pages but on longer pages, the image repeats underneath. Is there an attribute that I can set, or some way I can edit the css, so that the image repeats on the x axis only?
If not I guess I will have to make my image either very tall, or very wide and set it not to repeat - but it would be nice if I could keep the file size down with a theme setting for this :)

Use repeat-x, the top left is the starting position and not related to how it's repeated
