Read More link under Excerpts does not appear at all

I have configured under "Configure Excerpts / Custom read more" the default link that should appear under excerpts take the user to the post itself , but this link does not appear , even the default link/text does not appear - <p>Continue reading <a href="%permalink%">%title%</a></p>.

Is this a known issue ?

juggledad Aug 3, 2009 06:24 PM

what version of Atahualpa are you using?

3ukman Aug 4, 2009 10:21 AM

3.4.2 and WP 8.2 , but this has been the issue since 3.4.1 and WP 2.7

3ukman Aug 6, 2009 07:54 AM

any input on this one ?
It is quite an issue ...

gene Aug 6, 2009 01:49 PM

I'm seeing the same problem with Atahualpa 3.4.2 and Wordpress 2.8.3 (and 2.8.2). Changing the excerpt length works, but changing the "read more" string does not. The "read more" text always remains "[...]". I don't think any of the other plugins I have are conflicting with it, and I'm running most things out of the box (no custom code changes).

Flynn Aug 8, 2009 06:35 PM

This works for me, please try disabling plugins one by one.

@ 3ukman: make sure you've set "Only Excerpts" for the page type in question, at "Configure EXCERPTS"

gene Aug 13, 2009 09:46 AM

You are correct, it is a plugin that is interfering. I thought I had disabled them all in testing, but I missed the "Event Calendar 3" plugin -- and of course that is the one causing the problem:

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/event-calendar/

I'll try to dig a bit deeper into it today or next week.

Thanks!

Sven Aug 19, 2009 02:55 PM

Interestingly, I had a similar problem, but found that no plug-in was interfering.

On my blog (a work in progress), I had the same issue as above, with the read more tag or the end of excerpt tag not appearing on some posts. What I found was that if the initial text on the post was center justified (not left justified) or the first item was a image (that was center justified) there appears to be some confusion as to how many characters are actually present.

I simply changed this on the posts in question and the read more tag appears regardless of whether it is from the excerpt or read more tag.

Hope this helps some [...] <<<:)

yaaa this problem is coming with me also when i show excerpt on homepage the read more link is not appearing

3ukman Aug 24, 2009 12:45 PM

Basically by using <!--more--> tag in the post body and configuring on the Excerpts page - Show
"Full Posts" - does make a Read More link to appear.

Does this mean that there is currently a problem with the show "Only Excerpts" option which does not show a "Read More" link ?

Flynn Aug 27, 2009 12:26 PM

The Read More link is used in the_content but not in the_excerpt, that is normal WP behavior. The Read More link is supposed to split particular posts at an individual break point, whereas using the_excerpt shows the same amount of "first X words" followed by the same [...] ellipsis. The ellipsis can be configured at Configure Excerpts -> Custom read more

I should have named that differently than "Custom read more" because it is different and independent from "Read More" tag -> Read More, added to to-do list

Hey Flynn,

Thanks for the responses - I;m finally getting back to this. The Event Calendar 3 plugin is conflicting with the "Excerpts -> Custom read more" option. I have custom text/link in there, but it's still showing the [...]. I'm trying to see if I can work around it on the EC3 side, but I'm trying to keep the use of customizations to an absolute minimum.

Thanks,
Gene

This might explain my problem. Can someone see if my thinking is correct? Under the "Configure Excerpts" option page in Atahualpa, I have evnerything set to display "only excerpts"....and the read more tag is not showing up. I assume that is because, as quoted above, the read more link does not display on the excerpts...correct?

Is there anyway to get it to display? It is confusing my authors, who are not tech savy at all. They were taught that the read more button when posting adds the read more link. Obviously, I was a little off when I told them that.

Thanks

Brian

Let me see if I can explain it.

Say you have a post with 100 words and at ATO->Configure EXCERPTS you have
- Excerpt length = 55
- Posts or excerpts on HOME page? - set to Full Posts
- Show the first X posts on HOME page as full posts? = 0
--->you will see the full post

So you change 'Posts or excerpts on HOME page?' to 'Only Excerpts'
---> you will see the first 55 words and what you put in 'Custom read more'

Next you edit the article and after word 75 you put in the read more tag (<!--more-->)
---> you will see the first 55 words and what you put in 'Custom read more'

You move the '<!--more-->' after the 25th word
---> you will see the first 25 and nothing else
(I think this is a bug and I'll let Flynn know I think you should see what ever you put in 'Read More'

If you change 'Posts or excerpts on HOME page?' to 'Full Posts'
---> you will see the first 25 and what you put in ATO-> "Read More" tag->Read More

I hope this helps you out

This is excactly what is happening to me. I am putting the more tag before the 55th word and I'm not seeing anything. Bascially, I would like it to either automatically cut off the post (in case the author forgot the tag) or cut it where the tag is placed (if before the 55th word).

Thanks for the clarifications. I thought this was all the case, but it's good for my assumtions to be confirmed.

juggledad Oct 3, 2009 02:33 PM

You do see the post up to where the <--more--> is right?

brianlees Oct 4, 2009 08:04 AM

Correct. The post splits in the right location, it just doesn't display the "continue reading" link at the end. That only displays if the post is automatically truncated at 55 words. It seems it should display for both, as you stated earlier.

juggledad Oct 4, 2009 10:34 AM

ok, just wanted to make sure. I've reported this to Flynn but he is gone for another two weeks so keep checking back

brianlees Jan 18, 2010 04:53 PM

This still seems to be an issue in the latest version, 3.4.5...exactly as I describe above. If I add the more tag, it will not show up on the site. If I don't have the more tag in the post, it displays correctly after the x word.

nileshtrivedi Jan 21, 2010 03:37 AM

I am facing the same issue. Do we have any resolution ?
I am using Atahualpa 3.4.5

brianlees Feb 1, 2010 08:28 AM

Does anyone have a solve to this yet?

Sakshin Feb 11, 2010 08:04 AM

Me too having troubles with the read more link. The [...] shows but it doesn't link to anything, and it would be nice if the reader could continue reading. I'm running the latest versions of everything and on a local machine.
I gave in my own 'lees meer' (read more) text but even this doesn't come through or shows up. I read all the topics on this forum about it but none of the tips or solutions does it for me. I will
What to do?

Warm regards,
Sakshin.

juggledad Feb 12, 2010 06:30 AM

have you changed it at ATO->Configure EXCERPTS->Custom read more?

biancastuart Feb 25, 2010 02:14 AM

I am having the same problem with this on my site

I never had a problem with this until I made a post today and unlike all my other excerpts, it doesn't link to the post.

How could it just stop working for no reason, it was fine the other day when I made a post and I haven't done anything to the site ever since.

juggledad Feb 25, 2010 05:54 AM

biancastuart: you have an error in your post. It has a second '<img...' statement that is malformed.
Are you using automatic excerpts?
What version of Atahualpa and WP?
Go look at the post using the html editor and makesure the post has no errors in it
