How can I control excerpt thumb size?
Wordpress: 3.0.1
Atahualpa: 3.5.3 Hey guys, I'm still pretty new to Wordpress and this fantastic theme. I hope you can help me with my problem. Currently, I am trying to set up my photo blog so that on the Home Page, only excerpts will be shown with a thumbnail to the lef of them. If you go to www.knowingme.org and scroll down to "Laura: The Black and White Side", you will see that this is already working sort of okay. Now, I wonder this:
However, the thumbnail shown in my thread's excerpt measures 150x104 pixels, a size that I never specified anywhere. I got this thumbnail to display by defining the image as "featured image" in WP's post editor. I couldn't find any other way to do it - is there another way? Is the "thumbnail" that I configure in Atahualpa's theme options for excerpts something entirely different? How can I control the size of the thumbnail that is shown in the excerpt? I want it to be 300x200, as I specified in the theme options. And one last thing, although this is probably Wordpress-related. Wordpress (or Atahualpa?) automatically crops and resizes images for me when creating e.g. thumbnails. If I have a picture in portrait format, that can easily mean an automatically cut-off head. How can I define thumbnails myself? NextGen Gallery has a great tool for that, I'm wondering if Wordpress itself has a similar functionality. |
You can edit thumbnails in the media library. Just click on Edit and then Edit Image. You can then crop and apply only to the thumbnail.
I don't see a thumbnail in the excerpt you mentioned but yes it is defined by featured image. Working with thumbnails and such can be "twiddly" |
Haha that was bad timing, I had just removed it while trying some other stuff. It's back in "The Black and White Side", now floating right. Funnily enough, all the styles I apply to it in the ATO work fine, border, alignment etc. - just the size is off.
Thanks - I had found out about the cropping feature in the meantime! Great stuff. Still doesn't help me with the actual scaling of the thumbnail. I'm gonna create my own thumbnails in GIMP now, upload them by hand and put HTML code into the "Excerpt" field to display them. Let's see if that works. The thing is that Wordpress allows me to define sizes for Thumbnails, medium and large, but not for featured images. I wonder why nobody else out there seems to have problems with that. In fact, I changed the size settings for thumbnails in the WP settings, but when I edit the pictures I already have in my posts, I still see the old settings (I set thumbnails to 450/450, and it still shows 88x88 in the posts). Thanks again! Your help is much appreciated. |
I uploaded my own thumbnail (450x300) to the next post, "Laura: The Blue Side" (just below) and placed the following lines in the "Excerpt" field in the post editor:
Quote:
Yet, the image is not displayed. If you look at the post, you will see four grey pixels to the very right - this is the border that should contain the image, but it doesn't. Any pointers...? Thanks! |
Have you fiddled with the Post Thumbnails setting in the theme options?

The current settings in "Post THUMBNAILS" are:
Width: 450 px Height: 450 px Crop: No CSS: Quote:

Hey, I tried a couple more hours and then gave up. I think I found a good alternate solution for my page now. Thanks for helping.
If anybody still has an idea why Wordpress/Atahualpa insists on resizing featured images to 150/150 px in excerpts, regardless of what's defined in the WP and ATO settings, please contribute. It would be really helpful to know. Thanks! :-) |
Did you also try any of the settings in the WordPress media settings. They are intertwined with the Atahualpa settings.
|
Yep, I did. The defined thumbnail size in the media settings was 88/88 px at first, I changed it to 200/300, then to 450/450. It never influenced the size of the featured image, even for images that I newly uploaded after changing the settings.
In fact, lemme double-check that. I will upload some new pics now. |
You might also want to try a thumbnail regenerator lite Ajax Thumbnail Rebuild.
|
Thanks! I will keep that in mind for when I need thumbnails again.
