[SOLVED] How do I remove default widgets from sidebars?

right now, i have 'categories' and 'archives' on the left and 'recent posts' and 'meta' on the right. i'd like to delete 'meta' and move everything else to the right while adding a custom widget to the left sidebar.

i know HTML and CSS pretty well but am pretty shaky with php. i am using an ftp client to access my site.

any advice would be much appreciated as this is my first wordpress site build.

thanks,
debra

add a widget to the area. What you are seeing is the default widgets that WordPress puts in. Once you add a widget, you take control and the defaults for that area are shut off.
