setting font type and colors in sidebars

I need a detailed explanation of how to set font types and colors in the sidebars. I know that you can do this under ATO /widgets, but I have no idea what to enter into the relevant boxes.

If I have understood what I've been able to ferret out for myself, it has to do with css, but I can't seem to figure out the syntax necessary. Regardless, whatever I'm doing wrong I can't get any changes to show up on the sidebar.

Help?

The styling of any of the ATO options is in CSS syntax. One of the best ways to figure out what syntax to use is to do a google search on 'css syntax xxxxx' where xxxxx= the thing you want info on. Gor example goolge 'css syntax font' and then read about the results.
