Make the parent menu item non-clickable, only sub-menus

I'm using the new WP menu configuration and have many pages linked under a parent menu item (which is a page itself). Is it possible to have sub-menus that are clickable to their page and not have that top level button clickable?

For example across the top have Home, Contact, Departments. Under departments, would be Human Resources, R&D, House Keeping...and the parent "departments" wouldn't be an option to click.

Thanks!

This is a perennial question. I'd sugest to answer it once and make the thread sticky.

Some people solved this question by switching over to Wordpress 3.0 menus. "Just create custom menu items with the WordPress menu builder, and add # as the link."

Other people solved this question still using the Atahualpa's native menus by applying the bug fix:

I personally prefer Atahualpa's native menus over Wordpress 3.0 menus for the following reasons: when using Wordpress 3.0 menus for building the "Categories" menu,...
  • Every time you add a new category, you have not to forget to manually add the category to Wordpress 3.0 menu;
  • Every time you move the existing category around in WP's category hierarchy, you have not to forget to manually move the category in Wordpress 3.0 menu.
