I have created a new Atahualpa themed Wordpress blog/site at http://www.imaginingtoronto.com .

After extensive amateur tweaking I have gotten the site to work mostly as desired.

A problem is that I cannot get the site to open as http://www.imaginingtoronto.com . For some reason it redirects to http://www.imaginingtoronto.com/weblog. I have done my best to follow the WP Codex instructions to have the blog powered from my site's root directory while leaving the files in the WP directory. For the most part it works (i.e., my sub-pages, including About, Library and Course now load as desired -- e.g., imaginingtoronto.com/library), but the main page still loads as /weblog, and the current entries do not show -- instead there is an error message "Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn't here." The archives seem to work, though.

Any advice on how I can 'fix' the home page to load at the root (http://www.imaginingtoronto.com) and to have the current blog entries to appear properly rather than showing only as an error?

I should add that as long as I have the blog address (under Settings/General) set to www.imaginingtoronto.com/weblog, everything works fine, except that all pages resolve to imaginingtoronto.com/weblog (I desire to have them resolve to the root).

When I set the blog address to imaginingtoronto.com, this is when things go awry and current posts vanish.

When I set the Wordpress address to www.imaginingtoronto.com, everything goes awry.

Any help or advice would be appreciated greatly.

Check your settings at Site Admin -> General

Should be (with http:// at the beginning, and no slash at the end):

WordPress address (URL): http://www.imaginingtoronto.com

Blog address (URL): http://www.imaginingtoronto.com/weblog

Try this first, then let's go from there. More settings may be required as you mention "resolve to imaginingtoronto.com/weblog (I desire to have them resolve to the root)" and I am unsure what you mean with that, i.e. if you want everything to resolve to domain.com (without www.). That would be a setting in your .htaccess file

If this is not what you wanted:

1) Do you want to run 2 different sites on the domain, one non-WP site at domain.com/ and a WP blog at domain.com/weblog?
2) Do you want all sites to resolve to domain.com or www.domain.com (regardless of whether the WP blog is at the root .com/ or in a subdirectory .com/weblog/?

It turns out that my web hosting provider (Network Solutions) does not 'allow' Wordpress blogs to be installed to the root directory. Instead they must be installed to a subdirectory. This is a silly restriction, because it makes page navigation confusing. There is a simple work-around, however, which is to do a manual install of Wordpress (using the instructions in the Wordpress Codex). All one requires is to set up the sql database first. I was able to do this after a couple of calls to my provider to get some info (like DB_host). In the end, what had seemed very difficult was in fact rather simple.

I am writing a follow-up post for two reasons.

First, because I have read people claiming that Network Solutions does not allow users to install Wordpress to the root directory. As long as you do not rely on the automated installer, you should be able to customize things pretty much as you like (depending on your hosting package) if you do a manual install using the Wordpress instructions after setting up the sql database (you must have a unix acount, too). I am not at all skilled at web applications, and it worked for me.

Second, I wanted to write to thank Flynn for developing the Atahualpa theme. It customizes very beautifully and can be tweaked pretty much at will even by amateurs like me.
