[SOLVED] Possible to eliminate padding for section of middle column?

I would like to add a black horizontal bar (containing text and links) that spans the entire width of the center column (bleeds off the sides). Is there a way for me to eliminate the padding only for this small section of the page? I want to maintain the padding for the body text above the bar. Thanks!

How about a div with absolute positioning?

Thanks for introducing me to the "position" property. I played around a bit and ended up using
{position:relative;width:560px;left:-50px;} and it worked perfectly. Thank you!
