What is a widget container?
 

Sorry for asking a really silly question but I am a total newbie and learning everything from scratch. What is the widget container?

You have to give a little more context than that. I would guess that widget containers are anything widgets go in like sidebars but I'm not sure what your particular question refers to.

My apologies. I'm referring to everything that's included under the "style Widgets" sections in the ATO. I'm not sure what I'm styling.

The best way to get an idea of what is being styled is to add something to one of the boxes. For instance try changing the background to
To the Widget Container box and see what happens. Also the diagrams to the right give you an idea of what you are styling.
