Not sure where you want to put that code but if you need a article.php, you can make a copy of index.php as article.php and upload that.

so I can replace index.php with article.php?
or add?

index.php must stay, you can add page templates. A "articles.php" would be automatically used by Wordpress, when available in the theme's rot directory, for a page with the page slug (the name under which the page appears in a permalink URL) "articles"
