How do I `Turn ON` Side Bars?

I am using Atualpa and have no left side bars. I have loaded "Pages" into each of them as a test but they still do not appear. I rewad somewher that the Side bars need to be TURNED ON but can find nothing relevant to this.
Is there a problem with my template or am I just not seeing something simple?
I'm a raw beginner so please help.

Look in the style sidebars section of the theme options.
