[SOLVED] How to do a redirect?

All this talk of redirects has me bringing this up again.

Our old website had a page that much linked to from all over:

http://www.hatchtown.com/nostdir.html

I want to maintain that same URL but have people who go there be redirected to a new, and better!, page in the WP-powered site, maybe:

http://hatchtown.com/tools/misc-tools

How DO I set up the redirect?

Jim you do this in your .htaccess file.

take a look here:

Hey thanks Bill!

You put me onto some good stuff! I'm now reading a bunch about maybe trying to solve my "canonical URL" problem:

ie. what used to show up as http://www.hatchtown.com/ has been only http://hatchtown.com/

I want my "www" back!

Thanks again!

Bottomline: I have the "www" consistently appearing as part of my websites' URLs in my various browsers.

I wish I could say that I completely understand HOW I managed that. I have to say the .htaccess seems to be a bit of magical mystery. There are a lot of people out there who have figured out ONE way to do something (probably by trial and error!) and happily go off telling everyone else how to do it. Now, there'll be someone else who's doing that same thing BUT with COMPLETELY different code. Which way is better? Why the difference? Suddenly, everyone gets very quiet.

The one thing that I think that I have learned is that changes to .htaccess files can take a little time to "work their way" into the server/browser "thing". You have to make a change and then jump around between webpages, re-loading and refreshing as you go. Count to 100. Sometimes, what you were hoping would happen will suddenly POP onto your screen.
