color help

So i want to change everything in the background to black , but i have tried changing color to the
Post Container , and the layout container ? but they only changed the area with my text and pics Black ... . I had typed background: #000000; to try to change it . Sorry im such a noob

background: #000000;

is right. The Post container is a box for every single post or page. It contains several smaller containers, the kicker, the headline, the byline, the bodycopy and the footer. All of these can be styled separately

What you probably want to change is Theme Options -> Layout -> Layout Container Style

If i add the background: #000000; to the layout container style , it only goes black in the posts area again . Not behind .

I really like the look of this one http://stephanieizard.com/?q=cook I know its not all black on there , but you get the idea ...

Should i be adding someting other than background ? I tried like this too
background: #000000;
color: #000000;
layout container style: #000000;
layout container style background: #000000;

what am i missing ?

You should be in Body/Text and Links for this. You want the main body background, not the container.

I have my main background set to be white, as in background: #FFFFFF;
