Remove visible category

The options for excluding pages in the menu bar only seems to work for the pages, but not for categories. I noticed i was using a wp widget for the categories, but even when i removed it to use the default theme category bar, the category menu items still showed even when adding the id's to the exclude list.

What could be the problem?
