Impossible to add a widget to the sidebar

Hi,

Our server went recently to crash, and I am now reparing our site www.voilesdantan.org.
My problem is that I cannot add any new widgets (meta or minimeta, wp PHP, ...) to the sidebar : when I move them there they are not activated, and they disappear when I refresh the page.
I connot find out what is blocking the insertion of widgets.
Note that I have access to the existing widgets (search, events-calendar, nextgen, google weather...)
Hope that someone has an idea ? Thanks for help.
Manu

what version of atahualpa and wp?

What happens if you switch to the default theme, can you add widgets then?

paulae May 16, 2010 06:10 AM

I once had an events calendar plugin that was conflicting with WP's widget administration. Try deactivating that one and try the widget placement again.

Manu-PierreB May 16, 2010 10:28 AM

Thank you for this prompt and efficient answer.
After desactivation events calendar everything went OK again.
I installed calendar from Kieran O'Shea, had to use the "development version" and I am not enterely satisfeid : the plugin caudes a change of the dashboard layout, and the appearance of the events in the widget is not very nice when hoover.
Maybe could you recommand another calendar plugin, similar as events calendar, but more compatible with WP 2.8.3 and Atahualpa 2.3.2 ?
Thanks in advance for advice

juggledad May 16, 2010 10:35 AM

if you are really on Atahualpa 2.3.2, I suggest you do some upgrading , both of Atahualpa and WP
Wordpress 2.9.2 has been stable for me and I'd get Atahualpa to 3.4.6

paulae May 16, 2010 10:53 AM

I'm glad that helped you, Manu-Pierre. However, I agree with Juggledad: you should upgrade both Wordpress and Atahualpa. I'm using Kieran O'Shea's calendar successfully on several sites, and it does not interfere with the dashboard at all.

Manu-PierreB May 16, 2010 11:13 AM

Thanks for your advice.
I upgrade and keep you informed.

Manu-PierreB May 16, 2010 11:18 AM

What would you recommand :
- To upgrade WP or Atahualpa first ?
- Any link to help me for this double upgrade ?
Thanks in advance

paulae May 16, 2010 11:29 AM

I would recommend that you upgrade to Wordpress 2.9.2, then upgrade Atahualpa to version 3.4.6.

First, you should do a database backup, of course. If you don't already have it, the WP-DB Manager plugin makes this pretty easy.

Go to wordpress.org to read up on how to do a Wordpress upgrade.

Once that is done, you should disable all your plugins before installing the new Atahualpa. Then activate the plugins one by one, checking the site as you go for problems. Many of the old plugins you were using may no longer work, but there are usually new plugins or updates that will do the same job.

By the way, I love seeing your beautiful bateaux and the beautiful lac! I'll attach a photo of my little Herreshoff 12 1/2 on Menemsha Pond, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, USA. http://skilovers.com/seamist.jpg

Manu-PierreB May 16, 2010 11:32 AM

Please cross fingers !

paulae May 16, 2010 11:41 AM

D'accord! Bonne chance....

Manu-PierreB May 16, 2010 11:49 AM

Thanks Paulae,
You little Herreshoff 12 1/2 is superbe ! what's her name ?
By the way, should I go back to the standard WP theme (desactivating Atahualpa) before updating WP ?

Manu-PierreB May 16, 2010 11:54 AM

And another question : will all the custum settings of atahualpa remain ?

paulae May 16, 2010 12:21 PM

The boat is called Sea Mist. She really is beautiful, and yar.

You don't need to disable the theme in order to upgrade Wordpress.

paulae May 16, 2010 12:38 PM

The custom theme settings should remain. I can't promise, however!

Remember, you should download Atahualpa 3.4.6 and then upload it to your wp-content/themes folder. Make sure the folder is named atahualpa346 or something like that, so that it is different from your old Atahualpa. This way, if you have problems, you can simply revert to the old one while you figure out the issues.

Manu-PierreB May 16, 2010 01:06 PM

Hi Paulae,
I have updated WP, "successfully".
Actually, it is already a mess, as you can see : www.voilelesdantan.org
I made the next step towards Atahualpa 3.4.9 and it becomes worse.
Help !
What should I do now ?

paulae May 16, 2010 01:12 PM

First of all, I think you should do as I suggested and use Athualpa 3.4.6, not 3.4.9. 3.4.9 has not been very stable yet for some people, although I haven't had any trouble with it. Get 3.4.6 working, and wait a few days to try 3.4.9.

Did you install 3.4.9 into the same folder as 3.3.2 was in? Are you hosting this on your own server? I see the references to your C: drive. Maybe Juggledad can help further.

In the meantime, you can revert to the old theme. Can you get into your dashboard?

Manu-PierreB May 16, 2010 01:24 PM

Thanks Paulae for being here ...
- I revert to the old theme version : 3.3.2, but some errors remain
- I have access to the dashboard
- I am hosting on a friend's server, for this reason you see c:\

paulae May 16, 2010 01:32 PM

Is your friend's server running PHP 5?

Manu-PierreB May 16, 2010 01:33 PM

I have now loaded and activated 3.4.6
THe result can be seen on www.voilesdantan.org ... not good ! (pas bon !)

Manu-PierreB May 16, 2010 01:36 PM

I read in PHPMyAdmin :
- PHPMyAdminn: Version: 3.3.3
- Version du client MySQL: 5.0.51a

Manu-PierreB May 16, 2010 01:55 PM

It's already late here ... meet your answer tomorrow ?
Thanks

paulae May 16, 2010 01:59 PM

Bonne nuit. Check your friend's version of PHP. If it is not at least PHP 5, later versions of Wodrpress and the theme won't work.

Manu-PierreB May 16, 2010 02:01 PM

How can I check ?
The only info I have I told youn what can I have more ?
Bonne nuit !

At the top of functions.php, above

PHP Code:

// Load translation file

add this line:

PHP Code:

error_reporting(E_ALL E_NOTICE);

and save and upload the modified functions.php file
