[SOLVED] HELP! My widgets are acting weird in IE

Hi,

Hope someone can help me out with a widget problem I'm having. The problem only appears in Internet Explorer (on multiple computers). I typically use Google Chrome, so I'm not actually sure when the problem started. I discovered it yesterday. Here's the problem: I have a bunch of widgets on my right sidebar (http://ireneabdouportraitsweddings.com). The widgets are supposed to show up on every page, including the home/front page. In Google Chrome, everything displays fine. But in Internet Explorer, the widgets are missing on the home/front page, and only appear when I click on a post. In my Atahualpa theme settings, I put that the right widgets are supposed to appear on every page. Does anyone know what's wrong? (Btw, I was working in an Atahualpa 2.x version before; now I've installed the latest 3.x version; still same problem.)

Thanks!!!
Irene

I think the image widths in the center are causing the sidebar to get pushed out of site in IE.

Thanks, Larry. I can try that (though if the center column were too big, wouldn't that affect every page, not just the home/front page?). Do you know how to do it? Looking in my theme options, there's a section called "style & edit center column," but I don't see any option to change the width of the center column? (Btw, in my original post, I should have put the link to my blog, not the main website. My blog is at http://ireneabdouportraitsweddings.com/blog.)

Thanks again,
Irene

The one difference I see on your home page is the slide show. Can you try temporarily putting that post into draft status and see if IE behaves.

Hey, not fair! The widgets work if I put the slideshows in draft! Though I still don't understand why the widgets are OK with the slideshow when viewing the actual post???!!! Now that we know the problem, any ideas on how to make the two work together on the home/front page?

THANK YOU!
Irene

I would suspect there may be some settings for the width, etc. of the slide show. What slide show is it?

photoswithsoul Sep 11, 2010 10:22 AM

OK, it took me a while, but I (kind of) found the culprit. So you're right, it was a slideshow issue. I played around with the sizes of the slideshow, and the widgets came back, but then when I put the slideshow back to the original size, the widgets were still there, so I discovered it wasn't a size issue after all.

So, I currently have 10 blog posts showing on my home page. Three of the posts have slideshows. I traced the problem to one particular slideshow. The slideshow code for all the slideshows is generated by Photoshelter, where I have another website (http://archive.ireneabdouphotography.com). I just go into my Photoshelter account, choose a photo gallery, and tell it to generate the code for a slideshow, and then I cut and paste that into my Wordpress blog post.

So I don't know quite enough about code, but it appears to me that the code that Photoshelter is generating today is different from the code that it's generated at other times. (Though I don't really understand this, because the slideshow that's having the problem was generated earlier than the slideshows that are OK. But when I generate a new slideshow code today, it makes the widgets disappear.)

Here's a slideshow code that works (i.e. widgets act normally):

<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="800" height="600" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="wmode" value="opaque" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="bgColor" value="#AAAAAA" /><param name="flashvars" value="target=_self&amp;f_l=t&amp;f_fscr=t&amp;f_t b=t&amp;f_bb=t&amp;f_bbl=f&amp;f_fss=f&amp;f_2up=t &amp;f_crp=t&amp;f_wm=t&amp;f_s2f=t&amp;f_emb=t&am p;f_cap=t&amp;f_sln=t&amp;imgT=casc&amp;cred=iptc& amp;trans=xfade&amp;f_link=t&amp;f_smooth=f&amp;f_ mtrx=t&amp;tbs=5000&amp;f_ap=t&amp;f_up=f&amp;btyp e=old&amp;bcolor=%23CCCCCC" /><param name="src" value="http://www.photoshelter.com/swf/CSlideShow.swf?feedSRC=http%3A//archive.ireneabdouphotography.com/gallery/Africa-Dreamed/G0000fh1JUCygHXY%3Ffeed%3Djson" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#AAAAAA" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="800" height="600" src="http://www.photoshelter.com/swf/CSlideShow.swf?feedSRC=http%3A//archive.ireneabdouphotography.com/gallery/Africa-Dreamed/G0000fh1JUCygHXY%3Ffeed%3Djson" flashvars="target=_self&amp;f_l=t&amp;f_fscr=t&amp ;f_tb=t&amp;f_bb=t&amp;f_bbl=f&amp;f_fss=f&amp;f_2 up=t&amp;f_crp=t&amp;f_wm=t&amp;f_s2f=t&amp;f_emb= t&amp;f_cap=t&amp;f_sln=t&amp;imgT=casc&amp;cred=i ptc&amp;trans=xfade&amp;f_link=t&amp;f_smooth=f&am p;f_mtrx=t&amp;tbs=5000&amp;f_ap=t&amp;f_up=f&amp; btype=old&amp;bcolor=%23CCCCCC" bgcolor="#AAAAAA" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" wmode="opaque"></embed></object>

And here's a slideshow code that doesn't work (i.e. widgets disappear):

<object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" width="799" height="599"><param name="movie" value="http://www.photoshelter.com/swf/CSlideShow.swf?feedSRC=http%3A//archive.ireneabdouphotography.com/gallery/Abstracts/G0000eUdz73xH9w4%3Ffeed%3Djson"></param><param name="wmode" value="opaque"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="bgColor" value="#AAAAAA"></param><param name="flashvars" value="target=_self&f_l=t&f_fscr=t&f_tb=t&f_bb=t&f _bbl=f&f_fss=f&f_2up=t&f_crp=t&f_wm=t&f_s2f=t&f_em b=t&f_cap=t&f_sln=t&imgT=f&cred=iptc&trans=xfade&f _link=t&f_smooth=f&f_mtrx=t&tbs=5000&f_ap=t&f_up=f &btype=old&bcolor=%23CCCCCC"></param><!--[if !IE]><!--><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.photoshelter.com/swf/CSlideShow.swf?feedSRC=http%3A//archive.ireneabdouphotography.com/gallery/Abstracts/G0000eUdz73xH9w4%3Ffeed%3Djson" width="799" height="599" ><param name="wmode" value="opaque"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="bgColor" value="#AAAAAA"></param><param name="flashvars" value="target=_self&f_l=t&f_fscr=t&f_tb=t&f_bb=t&f _bbl=f&f_fss=f&f_2up=t&f_crp=t&f_wm=t&f_s2f=t&f_em b=t&f_cap=t&f_sln=t&imgT=f&cred=iptc&trans=xfade&f _link=t&f_smooth=f&f_mtrx=t&tbs=5000&f_ap=t&f_up=f &btype=old&bcolor=%23CCCCCC"></param><!--<![endif]--><a href="http://archive.ireneabdouphotography.com/gallery/Abstracts/G0000eUdz73xH9w4"><img src="http://www.photoshelter.com/gal-kimg-get/G0000eUdz73xH9w4/s/799/599" alt="" /></a><!--[if !IE]><!--></object><!--<![endif]--></object><br><a href="http://archive.ireneabdouphotography.com/gallery/Abstracts/G0000eUdz73xH9w4">Abstracts</a> - Images by <a href="http://archive.ireneabdouphotography.com">Irene Abdou</a>

So the one that works appears to be Macromedia Flash, and the one that doesn't work is I don't Shockwave Flash? I don't know enough about this to know if they're really different...

I glad you at least sorted it out to some extent.

Thank you so much for your help, Larry. I would never have known to look at the slideshows if it weren't for your advice!

Irene
