How to create a template for a static homepage

Hi everyone.

I am relatively new to all this and apologise for any idiotic questions.

I am currently building a website for someone and I want to create a homepage that is differently templated from the rest of the site. I would like one giant image with the menu bar above it. No sidebars or anything like. This is the page I would like to change http://michaeljbaker.co.uk/ and this is an ex. that shows what I basically would like to achieve. http://www.landsecurities.com/

Many thanks for any help anyone can give me.

You have quite a job ahead of you to replicate much of that page but here is a link to creating a splash page (which Juggledad just posted and so I am modifying my post to take that into account) might give you some ideas of what can be done. You can of course turn off sidebars on particular pages, add widget areas, etc. etc.

I started using Atahualpa by just going through all the theme settings and trying out various configurations just to see what they did. Then before I beat my head against the wall I would come to the forum for help. The theme options are quite well documented though and many if not most of your questions can be answered right there.

Welcome aboard.

Thanks for the advice. Alas I can't access the post as I don't have permission. Is this down to lack of posts or do I need to donate?

Thanks.

I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that is in the Gold forum. The Gold forum is accessible with a donation of $20 or more. Or you could just turn off sidebars and such on the front page to give you the look you are after.

Am happy to donate 20 bucks but how do I turn off sidebars for one page only?
Sorry to be so basic!

In ATO>Style & configure Sidebars you just put the ID of the page you don't want a particular sidebar to show up on. Do you know how to determine an ID of a page?

RichardG Sep 15, 2010 04:24 PM

I thought I did but I get http://michaeljbaker.co.uk/wp-admin/...18&action=edit which is different from the instructive suggestion and does not seem to have an id. Maybe I configured things wrong starting out.

This plugin makes it easier to determine IDs.

Done it! I didn't use id, I just inchecked front page. Now I need to work how to put a different header on this page. Should I use the dynamic header widget or is there an easier way? and also how to get rid of text drived from title of page and the link in the menu bar for the page.
Many Thanks for your time and patience.
Am going to bed now! am in uk

I have used the Dynamic Header Widget and like it. You can also use conditional code but the plugin is probably easier.

I am not sure what text you want to get rid of.
